Ultrasonic welding / Ultrasonic Bonding - Mode of Operation When welding with ultrasound the electrical oscillations produced by the generator are converted by a converter (transducer) into mechanical oscillations. A possibly necessary piece of amplitude transformation (also called booster ), transforms the oscillation supplied by the converter (similar to an electrical transformer).
These oscillations are transmitted by a sonotrode (welding tool) to the material for bonding. The converter, the booster and the sonotrode are co-ordinated thereby in their mechanical dimensions with the output frequency of the generator. By the reflection of the mechanical oscillations at the sound-radiating end face of the Sonotrode a standing wave is formed, which transfers energy into the workpieces.
Frequencies Typical frequencies for ultrasonic welding are 20kHz, 35 kHz and 40 kHz. More rarely are frequency at 15 kHz, and systems with a frequency of 70kHz.
Areas of application For welding by means of ultrasonic suitable materials are thermoplastics and Non-ferrous metals, e.g. copper, brass and their alloys.
